The story behind We’re going to have a baby!

I remember when my sister told me she was pregnant with her second child and I wondered how my niece would adapt to the big sister role. It was then that I really considered how rough this is on a first child as I had struggled with the transition from Jess to mum even though I had chosen this path, had an adults ability of comprehension and had planned as best I could for what was ahead.

I started to search and read books of this kind. Despite the vast number of ‘new baby’ books available, I couldn’t find the one I was after. I wanted a book that would gently mention the physical changes of mum, how a baby arrives into the world, typical behaviour of a newborn and how a big sibling would interact with their new baby.

Where all of my poems have originated (in the nursing chair), I sat and wrote ‘We’re going to have a baby! The words were flowing. It wasn’t long after that I started researching how to turn these texted words into the new baby book I wanted to gift to my sister.

Who is Farmer Dave?

Farmer Dave is just as much a character in real life as he is in this story. He may be found bird watching, photographing wild flowers, collecting honey or singing a bird song to Farmer Hannah who has been known to rescue her chooks from the teeth of an opportunistic fox!

Whilst these amazing friends inspired the story Farmer Dave, the story is stretched! I can gladly report Dave’s farming endeavours have been far more successful in real life.

Why Wilson’s Promontory?

Wilson’s Promontory is one of my favourite places! I’ve been visiting the Prom since I was a child. My first overnight hike, longest trail run and favourite waves have all been within this beautiful park. I have so many fond memories here and am loving creating new ones with my little family.

I wanted to make a book available to families that would teach them about the natural and human history of this place and encourage them to get active and explore the many hidden gems The Prom has to offer.
